Mr. Stefan Marx

Dipl.-Phys. & Managing Director, SubCtech GmbH

Graduate physicist Stefan Marx, owner of SubCtech GmbH, already started developing the first autonomously 2000m diving float between 1987 and 1993 at the Institute of applied Physics/Marine Technology at the CAU Kiel. From 1993 to 1998, he was responsible for development, construction and operation of the monitoring network North and Baltic Sea regarding the EUREKA project MERMAID (now BSH MARNET) at the GKSS research centre (now HZG) near Hamburg. MERMAID was honoured with the Lillehammer Prize in 2003. As head of the marine technology office Kiel at 4H JENA Engineering GmbH, Stefan Marx developed products such as FERRYBOX between 1999 and 2006.

In 2006, he co-founded CONTROS Systems & Solutions GmbH (now Kongsberg Maritime Contros GmbH), aiming to develop their own methane sensors and accessories for offshore Oil & Gas. The first prize at the KERN-Gründerpreis was won in the same year.

The spin-out of SubCtech GmbH in early 2010 was accompanied by a new focussing on scientific pCO2 analyzers and industrial Li-Ion battery systems. In 2013, regarding the OceanoScientific® project in Paris, Stefan Marx was honoured with the Deutsch-Französischer Wirtschaftspreis among Daimler, Renault and others.

Being a maritime expert, he worked as a consultant for numerous companies, e.g. for Fraunhofer Gesellschaft  on the TIETEK AUV project, in the NATO Industrial Advising Group 126 to equip sensors in AUVs, for US offshore companies in Ruanda, for the World Bank in the South Sinai Development Project and for multiple university projects.

With SubCtech, Stefan Marx supports training opportunities and the inclusion of the families of the employees, as well as sponsoring of young people and their visions.

The pressure to work in greater depths and beneath the ice increases. Along with the urge to increase efficiency, this leads to the necessity of electrifying offshore subsea systems. SubCtech offers subsea power outlets in the form of Li-Ion battery systems. With suitable technology, highly available, reliable, safe and highly efficient solutions are feasible. In recent years, SubCtech developed innovative subsea batteries in addition to a large number of AUV-batteries. The speech explains how safe systems, qualified in accordance with ISO 13628:6 and MIL-STD 810G, are used subsea as a standard product up to SIL 3 in a highly efficient way.
