"Electrode cross section studies for battery QA/QC"
Battery manufacturing involves several critical production steps relating to the formation of electrodes. Coating, pressing, drying, calendaring and slitting all have their challenges and needs monitoring for good QA/QC. The study of electrode cross sections using scanning electron microscopy has become an established method that can provide information about thickness, particle size distribution, delamination, porosity and more.
Good results require proper sample preparation and different methods for making suitable electrode cross sections will be discussed looking at potential artefacts, required sampling areas and speed. Automated image acquisition and quantitative image analysis methods will also be introduced.
