
Dr. Stefan Permien is the CEO and co-founder of UniverCell GmbH, a German cell and electrode production company focusing on special application markets. With a background in chemistry from the University of Kiel and a PhD focused on lithium-ion battery materials, Dr. Permien is a recognized expert in the battery industry. He also holds an MBA, which has complemented his technical expertise with strong business acumen.
Before founding UniverCell in 2019, Dr. Permien served as Chief Technology Officer at Customcells Itzehoe. His ambition to scale beyond research and into full-scale battery production led him to create UniverCell. Today, the company aims to push the boundaries of battery technology and contribute to Europe's growing energy storage market, with a focus on sustainability and innovative energy solutions. UniverCell is scaling up production at its Flintbek facility, targeting significant growth in Europe's battery sector, which is expected to see rapid expansion in the coming years.

Founded in 2019, UniverCell has rapidly established itself as one of Europe's leading producers of customized electrodes and cells for special applications, with a production capacity of ~1.5 GWh.
At UniverCell, we are processing over 200 diverse electrode formulations each year, encompassing a broad spectrum from LFP and Graphite to NMC and SiC, as well as innovative materials like XNO, LNMO, NCMA, and NCA. This knowledge allows us to swiftly customize and optimize electrode recipes based on specific application needed by our customers. In the presentation, I will highlight how we refine existing formulations to enhance their performance and adaptability for scale-up from pilot to production levels.
I will further show, how we can utilize these electrodes in order to develop high performance prototype pouch and cylindrical cells, including the 21700 format. Thereby, we can verify and optimize the unique chemical composition of the electrodes tailored to specific customer requirements. This flexibility enables us to meet a wide array of needs spanning heavy-duty, high-power, and high-energy applications, thus positioning UniverCell as a pivotal player in special application markets, beyond the standardized automotive market.
